Various Bio-enzymes

Bio-enzymes (BEs) also known as eco-enzymes/garbage enzymes/fruit enzymes and technically; effective microorganisms (EMOs) are product of simple process of fermentation of 30–90 days. Any organic waste including fruits and vegetables’ peels or whole fruit could be made into bio-enzymes. These are alike pro-biotic vinegar and has multiple use ranging from home care to agricultural applications to environmental bio-remediation.

How to make bio-enzymes (BEs)

Ingredients (1:3:10:15)
1 part of Jaggery
3 parts of fruit or vegetable or organic waste
10 parts of water
15 parts of container size (air tight plastic container)

(e.g. for 2 liter air tight container take 100 gm jaggery, 300 gm F&V waste, 1 liter water)

Procedure
All ingredients are to be fermented over period of 3 months/90 days for the first batch/making and, second batch/making onward, culture from first batch could be taken to reduce the fermentation span to 30–45 days only.

For the first one-third period container lid needs to be opened daily for escaping out of gases resulted from the partial fermentation and next in two-third period container lid needs to be closed for complete fermentation e.g. for 90 days fermentation, first 30 days container needs to open daily and stir, and for next 60 days container may open on 10–15 days interval to escape out gases.

Technically, first batch takes 90 days and then further 30–45 days for every batch depending of temperature variations. All organic material settles down at the bottom of container after fermentation. Liquid needs to be strained and solid material at the bottom could be used as culture for next bio-enzymes or being used as fertilizer in garden.

Yeast or BEs as starter culture could be used to start first batch of fermentation ready BEs in span of 30–45 days.

Notes
.Container should keep in cool and dry place with air tight.
.Brown sugars or jaggery is recommend as they have more minerals that white sugars.
.If white mold/mould layer appears, stir the liquid.
.If warm/maggots appears, add more sugars and stir.
.Fruit based bio-enzymes smell good and give pleasant aroma than vegetable residue based bio-enzymes so use more fruit wastage for aromatic BEs.
.Citrus BEs are best in aroma. various ingredients are added and experimented to brew numerous combinations of BEs.
After straining the solution, do not throw away the waste isolate, use it either as fertilizer for garden or starting culture for next batch.

Benefits
Bio-enzymes are chemical free concoction of beneficial micro-organisms
(EMOs) which are safer for human, animal and environment health equally.
Bio-enzymes could be used and converted into numerous valuable products using it as base ranging from home care to agriculture bio-fertilizers.

Home care
*BEs could be used as dish washer, cloth washing and general washing purpose after mixing soap nut solution or powder (150 ml/mg per liter of BE).
*BEs could be used for bathing pouring 2–3 spoon in bucket of water. It promotes good skin health and helps in healing skin problems.
*BEs could be used for floor mopping, cleaning washrooms and as room freshers. BEs also help to check indoor air pollution.

Agriculture and gardening
*Kitchen organic waste could be converted in BEs and used for gardening purpose to enhance fertilization, plant growth promoters and to ward off pest and diseases, and plant immunity builders @10ml/liter of water.
*It could be used in wet or kitchen compost bins to avoid stinking and smell in replacement of Bokashi powder.
*Horticultural waste, vegetable and fruit markets waste, fruit and vegetable processing waste could be converted into bio-enzymes at decentralized level and could be used in-situ or sell-off to earn additional incomes. Such designs could help to ameliorate farming and environment crisis with simple design.

We are running a ‘Best out of Waste’ programme in Punjab, India where we are helping farmers to convert their fruits and vegetable wastage into bio-enzymes to being used in-situ farming and to further market to earn additional incomes. We further making a community programme by bringing in local schools, juice vendors and municipality to make BEs at decentralized level to adopt bio-enzymes as elixir of life. BEs could help to lead chemical free, alternative and sustainable living. BEs could help in regenerative agriculture and to make our soils carbon rich again.

Bio-remediation and multi-cleanser
BEs could play huge role in chemical engineering in terms of water purification, sewage treatment, river purification, to contain ocean pollution etc in numerous ways using them in our homes to industries in our daily lives. It could be used in any kind of cleansing activities.
